How to Install and Activate Microsoft Office 2024: Complete Walkthrough
Installing Office 2024 takes about 10 minutes on a modern connection. Unlike older versions that shipped on DVD, Office 2024 is downloaded directly from Microsoft's servers using your product key as the authentication token. Here is the complete process.

Step 1: Go to setup.office.com
Open any browser and navigate to setup.office.com. Sign in with your Microsoft account (create one free if you do not have one — it is not optional). Click Enter a product key instead if prompted, or look for the field labelled Enter your product key.
Step 2: Enter Your Product Key
Type or paste your 25-character Office key. Microsoft will verify it and associate the license with your Microsoft account. Once verified, you will see your product listed in your account — you can now download it as many times as needed on any eligible device.
Step 3: Download the Installer
Click Install Office (or the equivalent button — the UI may vary slightly by region). A small bootstrap installer (~7 MB) will download. Run it. The installer will then download the full Office package in the background — approximately 3–4 GB. Your computer must stay online throughout this process.

Step 4: Sign In to Activate
When the installation completes, open any Office app (e.g. Word). You will be prompted to sign in. Use the same Microsoft account you used in Step 1. Office will verify your license entitlement online and activate automatically — no additional key entry required.
Installing on Mac
The process on macOS is identical through Step 2. In Step 3, Office downloads a standard .pkg installer file instead of an .exe. Run the package installer, grant any requested permissions, and then open Word or Excel to trigger the sign-in and activation flow.
How Many Devices Can You Install On?
Office 2024 Home & Student: 1 device only (Windows or Mac — pick one). Office 2024 Home & Business: 1 device. Microsoft 365 Personal: up to 5 devices simultaneously. Microsoft 365 Family: up to 5 users, 5 devices each.
Reinstalling on a New Device
Because the license is tied to your Microsoft account, you do not need your original product key to reinstall. Go to account.microsoft.com/services, find your Office product, and click Install — the full download link will be there.
