How to Activate Windows 11 with a Digital License: Step-by-Step
Activating Windows 11 with a digital license is straightforward once you know the exact steps. This guide covers the complete process from receiving your product key to confirming a permanent digital license attached to your Microsoft account.

Before You Begin
Make sure you have the following ready before starting:
- Your 25-character product key (delivered to your email after purchase)
- An active internet connection (required for online activation)
- A Microsoft account (recommended — attaches the digital license to your account for future reinstalls)
- Administrator rights on the Windows installation you want to activate
Step 1: Open Activation Settings
Click the Start button and select Settings (the gear icon). Navigate to System → Activation. You will see your current activation status — it should show "Windows is not activated" if you are starting fresh.
Step 2: Enter Your Product Key
Click Change product key. A dialog box will appear asking you to enter your 25-character key in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Type or paste your key carefully, then click Next.

Step 3: Online Activation
Windows will now attempt to validate your key with Microsoft's activation servers. This typically takes 10–30 seconds on a fast connection. If activation succeeds, you will see a confirmation message: "Windows is activated".
Step 4: Link to Your Microsoft Account (Strongly Recommended)
After activation, return to Settings → System → Activation and click Add an account. Sign in with your Microsoft account. This converts your product-key activation into a digital entitlement linked to your account — if you ever reinstall Windows on the same hardware, it will activate automatically without needing the key again.
Troubleshooting Common Errors
- Error 0xC004F074 — Key Management Service (KMS) host unreachable. Use the phone activation method via slui.exe 4 if online activation fails.
- Error 0xC004C003 — Product key blocked. Contact the seller and request a replacement key.
- Error 0x803F7001 — Windows license not found. This usually means a hardware configuration mismatch — check that you are activating the correct edition (Home vs Pro).
